Fire burnt 'kek lapis' factory

A famous 'kek lapis' (layered cake) factory at Jalan Astana in Petra Jaya was razed in an afternoon fire today.

There were however no casualties although four staff were working in the factory during the time of incident at around 3.55pm.

The owner of the factory, Rabiah Amit, 52 was however saddened that about 500 recipes of her famous kek-lapis which was kept in the office also went up in smoke.

The first person to notice the flames was Rabiah's 15 year-old daughter who alerted the other staff when smoke reached out to the roof of the building, they immediately vacated the building and switching the gas mains.

It was believed that the estimated losses amounted to RM200,000 which included equipment in the building, a 4WD vehicle and a motorcycle destroyed in the incident.

Fire personnel from the Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Department were desptached to the scene to bring down the flames where it took 10 minutes to control the blaze and put out by 4.30pm.
